Your programmer will deliver you a fully functional app according to your specifications. But, you should expect to have to pay the developer every year to improve your app (new features, make it easier to use, etc.).
The $3000 you spent to launch your app just gets you a very simple app with the minimum features. In the first year after launch, expect to spend another $3000 to improve your app.
After that, a good rule of thumb is each year expect to spend on programmers at least 50% of the TOTAL spend you have spent on the application.
Year 1: $3000 to build your app
Year 2: $3000 to improve your app
Year 3: $3000 to improve your app (50% of $3000+3000).
Year 4: $4500 ($3000+3000+3000)*50%
You need to keep spending to keep your app competitive and useful.
But, those programmer costs should be coming from revenue earned from the app – not your pocket.
